Terracotta Pit
The terracotta soldiers were buried in subterranean earth and wood structures. You can see one of the main partition walls in the background.
The wide clay structures in this image are the earth-rammed walls that supported wood roofs. The roofs were covered with reed mats and layers of clay and soil. When completed the structures were almost ten feet above ground level.
The remains of crossbeams and logs that were burnt to ashes can be seen in the back. The indentations on the top of the walls are supports where crossbeams were placed.
